Project Overview
For this project, Gloucestershire Garden Design was asked to create a modern outdoor space for our clients, Sue and Peter, in Abbeymead. They desired a more contemporary garden design to make better use of their landscape, while still focusing on planting.

Outdoor Kitchen Installation
While the garden is compact, we wanted to create plenty of space for dining, hosting, and relaxing to align with Sue and Peter’s lifestyle. One of the main installations throughout this contemporary garden project was the outdoor kitchen. The outdoor kitchen in this Abbeymead garden is fairly small, but still fitted with the necessary equipment for easy cooking and dining outdoors.
All-Weather Use
This contemporary garden has multiple zones to accommodate entertaining, relaxing, and dining. Using a combination of hardscaping, such as porcelain paving for the patio, and turfing, we created defined zones across the compact landscape for cohesion and flow.
As well as creating separate zones, we wanted to ensure this contemporary garden could be used in all weather conditions, and our clients wanted to enjoy their garden throughout the year.
Pergola Installation
Over the patio dining area, we have installed a Maze pergola with two pull-down screens. This allows Sue and Peter to create an intimate, private seating area for family dinners, as well as protect the dining space from wind and rain throughout the year.
Similarly, we installed a small heater in the seating area of the contemporary garden. There are multiple seating areas across the garden, including the main patio dining area and a more relaxed environment at the top of the garden, also covered by a pergola and centred around a fire pit.
A Focus On Planting
While contemporary garden design usually relies on simple planting designs, Sue and Peter desired a lively landscape that reflected their love of gardening. This is why there are multiple planting areas across the landscape, with raised planters leading into the lawn area, as well as flower beds across the rest of the landscape and leading into the seating spaces.
A combination of seasonal flowers, grasses, and shrubs has been planted to add colour and interest across the garden, making this a unique take on contemporary garden design. There is also a small water feature to add a sense of tranquillity and calm throughout the seasons.
